Description

The Rheem SP-12143 Hot Surface Ignitor utilizes a resistive ceramic heating element that becomes hot when a 120V electrical current flows through it, creating a surface temperature sufficient to ignite gas in a burner system. As electricity passes through the ignitor, resistance causes it to rapidly increase in temperature until it glows hot enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture during the start-up cycle. This controlled heating process replaces a standing pilot and allows timed ignition of the burner. It is installed in gas-fired equipment, typically positioned near the burner assembly where direct ignition of gas flow is required for operation.
