The Southbend 1189311 Flame Sensor identifies the presence of a burner flame when electrical current is produced when the flame contacts the sensor rod and ground. A flame is sensed, and a signal is transmitted to the control system to allow the flow of gas to proceed, and when no flame is sensed, the signal is stopped. This flame sensor is installed within the region of the burner assembly at a 90-degree angle, and the sensing rod is directly in the path of the flame.
