The Rheem RHMSP-12143 Hot Surface Ignitor works by using a ceramic heating element that heats up when electrical current is applied raising its temperature until it is hot enough to ignite gas in a burner system. As 120V power flows through the ignitor electrical resistance causes the element to glow at a high temperature creating the ignition source needed for burner startup. It also works as part of the flame initiation sequence within gas-fired heating equipment. It is installed in heating appliances, typically positioned near the burner assembly where direct ignition of the gas-air mixture is required.
